RIP has two versions, i.e., RIP-1 and RIP-2. You can specify the RIP packet version processed by a certain interface.
RIP-1 packets are transmitted in the broadcast mode.
RIP-2 packets are transmitted in two modes: broadcast or multicast, with multicast as the default mode. In RIP-2, the multicast address is 224.0.0.9. One major advantage of the multicast mode is that in the same network, the devices that are not running RIP can avoid receiving the RIP broadcast packets. In addition, the multicast mode can prevent the devices with RIP-1 running from incorrectly receiving and processing the routes with subnet masks in RIP-2. When an interface is running in RIP-2 broadcast mode, it can also receive RIP-1 packets.
By default, an interface receives and sends RIP-1 packets. When the interface RIP version is set to RIP-2, the default mode is multicast.
