S9500 supports the following multicast protocols: IGMP, IGMP Snooping, PIM DM, PIM SM, MSDP and MBGP.
IGMP: As an TCP/IP protocol responsible for IP multicast group member management, the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) is used by IP hosts to establish and maintain their multicast group memberships to immediately neighboring multicast routers.
IGMP Snooping: Internet group management protocol snooping (IGMP snooping) is a multicast constraining mechanism that runs on Layer 2 Ethernet switches to manage and control multicast groups.
PIM DM: Protocol Independent Multicast-Dense Mode (PIM-DM) is a type of dense mode multicast protocol. PIM-DM applies to small-sized networks. In that network environment, members of a multicast group are relatively dense.
PIM SM: Protocol Independent Multicast-Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) is a sparse-mode multicast routing protocol. PIM-SM applies to big-sized networks with a wide coverage and scattered members.
MSDP: Multicast Source Discovery Protocol (MSDP) is used to discover the multicast source information in other PIM-SM domains.
MBGP: Multiprotocol BGP (MBGP, also called BGP-4+) can carry IPv4 unicast routing information and other network layer protocol (such as multicast and IPv6) routing information. Carrying multicast routing information is only a extended function.
