Q: What’s the relationship between a voice coding/decoding mode and its occupied bandwidth?
A: The bandwidth of voice coding is different from the occupied bandwidth. The former refers to the bandwidth of actual voice packet. However, it is necessary to add various packet headers (such as the RTP packet header, UDP packet header and IP packet header) to a voice packet when this voice packet is transmitted over the IP network. Because the voice packet is rather small, the additional bandwidth is rather considerable. The following table lists the packetization duration and the corresponding actual bandwidth in each coding mode.
Table 1: Relationship between the actual bandwidth and voice coding and packetization duration
Description
1. RTP packet header: 12bytes. UDP packet header: 8bytes. IP packet header: 20bytes.
2. The bandwidth calculation of this table does not include the physical frame header, which is dependent on the specific network.
3. The bandwidth calculation of this table does not consider the mute detection. The efficiency of mute detection is calculated at 60%.
